About the Founders of BMSA PDF Print E-mail

Dr Joaquin Andrade (Uruguay), Drs Maarten Aalberse (France) and Christine Sutherland (Australia) dedicate this site to the appreciation and dissemination of evidence-based therapeutic strategies.

Each has wide experience of the "energy" therapies, playing a key role in pioneering these in their respective countries. However each of them, after careful research and consideration, has come to the conclusion that the "energy" paradigm is not only poorly founded, but a distinctly unhelpful paradigm which must be replaced by more scientifically-based models, in the best interests of our field, and of the people it serves.

Christine Sutherland, Behav. Couns

Christine Sutherland is the CEO and founding director of The Lifeworks Group Pty Ltd, and was responsible for the development of an innovative group treatment program for clinical depression, subjected to experimental trial in December 2000. Christine was also responsible for the "Get a Life" program for schools, subjected to experimental trial in April-May 2000, and a treatment program for unrelieved chronic pain, subjected to experimental trial in October 2001.

She also developed WeightChoice, an on-line treatment program for overweight/obesity.

Christine is a behavioural counsellor who has a counselling and training background of 32 years, with a passion for research and development of innovations in training and therapy. She pioneered the introduction of neurosomatic therapies in Australia as an advanced trainer in EFT, as well as BSFF, being trained herself by the developer of the method, Dr Larry Phillip Nims. She has clinically supervised aspirants for certification with the Australian Counselling Association.

In her work as an internationally recognised NLP trainer, Christine has developed training programs for Practitioner Certification and Master Practitioner Certification, the content of which is in advance of the current world standards.

Her latest development, in 2003, is NeuroStim, a promising treatment for a range of disorders, including non-responsive chronic pain. This has brought international attention and is currently the focus of joint venture discussion in the USA and Great Britain.

Christine's company, The Lifeworks Group Pty Ltd, serves both the corporate and clinical sectors.

Christine's major foci are:

  • Dissemination of  consensus scientific descriptions of the mechanisms of change
  • Building awareness of the importance of a truly "whole-of-life" approach to the delivery of therapy so that "techniques" are delivered in a sane and effective context
  • Sharing of  more effective (demonstrably proven) approaches to treating a range of mental and physical disorders
Christine is responsible for this web site and all queries about the site should be directed to her. Please feel welcome to also contact fellow founder Maarten Aalberse on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Maarten Aalberse, DRS. Clin. Psych

Drs Aalberse studied clinical psychology in Holland (Leyden University). His main postdoctoral training was in a psycho-dynamically based experiential approach called "Unitive Psychotherapy".

He undertook additional training in NLP, Somatic Traumatherapy, Provocative Therapy, Fascia-and-Movement Therapy and the main forms of "Energy Psychology".

Before moving to France in 1994, he co-developed and co-conducted long-term professional trainings in Unitive Psychology. He now teaches professional courses on "A Healing Relationship with Shame" New Approaches to Borderline and Narcissistic Processes" and "Graceful Means: an Inter-subjective Approach towards Autonomic Balance and Gestural Coherence".

Dr Aalberse has written numerous articles and a forthcoming book, "Shame and Eros". His interest continues to be in the integration of BMSA in experiential, intersubjective and mindfulness-based practices, and more concretely in how to integrate BMSA with practices of mindful movement.

Joaquin Andrade, MD.

Dr Andrade has practised medicine for more than 30 years in Uruguay and Argentina. He was chief of ward of medicine in a public hospital, as well as chief of ER and external consultations.

He brought NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) to Uruguay 20 years ago, and also pioneered the practice of acupuncture in that country 30 years ago, after training in hospitals in various oriental countries.

He has authored several clinical research papers relating to acupuncture studies and has presented these to medical peers. Tens of thousands of patients have been assisted at his clinics in Uruguay and Argentina.

As a member of Energy Psychology Interactive CD Advisory Team, Dr Andrade assisted in the production of a training product which has been favourably reviewed by the APA. Dr Andrade co-authored, with David Feinstein Ph.D, the first large-scale study on the clinical results of BMSA in anxiety disorders.

As an organisational consultant, Dr Andrade has worked with foundations, ministries, multi-national corporations and presidential candidates. He is the author of several books, has participated in more than 200 courses and congresses, and has given lectures and training in six universities and thirteen countries.

Dr Andrade pioneered BMSA in Latin America and is one of the first practitioners to propose scientific explanations of its mechanisms, although currently he is not active in the BMSA organisation or site.
